It was an exciting time for ‘Naturalistas’ in Lagos on Sunday the 4th of June 2017 at the Natural Hair workshop hosted by the Natures Gentle Touch Hair Institute.
Nigeria’s first and largest hair Institute, Natures Gentle Touch Hair Institute hosted another edition of its Natural Hair workshop with ‘Naturalistas’ in attendance. This event featured a general discuss on Natural hair trends, how to care for it, maintenance and the politics of wearing natural hair in the workplace. In addition to this was a Q & A session where guests had the opportunity to ask the Institute’s lead Trichologist questions that border around how to take care of their natural hair. This session was a major eye-opener for guests present on appropriate Natural Hair care regime.
The workshop was created by the Institute to further live up to its vision of empowering individuals through education and knowledge sharing. It is a platform designed to support Nigerian women who choose to wear their natural hair, to meet other fellow ‘Naturalistas’, to commune and support one another on this journey of natural hair.
“The Nigerian Kinky natural hair is beautiful when it is well taken care of. On the flip side, it can be difficult to manage when you do not know what to do. Creating a platform for women to share their natural hair stories as well as gain knowledge from hair experts can make a huge difference in ensuring that this natural hair journey is smooth and enjoyable” said Anita Anosike, Brand Manager of Natures Gentle Touch
There will be an upcoming edition in the nearest future which will be open to more Nigerian women outside Lagos who are natural, transitioning to natural, and those with chemically-treated hair that are considering a journey into natural tresses.
The event ended with ended with a networking session.
Does bad hair mean bad health? Is your hair trying to tell you something about your health? Maybe. Some conditions and medications affect your body as well as your hair. In other cases, you may just need to take better care of your hair or scalp.
Dandruff isn’t contagious. So how do you get it? this may be due to an overgrowth of a fungus. Other possible risk factors include oily skin, stress, obesity, cold, dry weather, and having eczema or psoriasis. Although it’s embarrassing — and the itching can be bothersome — dandruff isn’t harmful.
Hair loss otherwise known as alopecia areata may mean that your immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, causing hair to fall out , often suddenly. Most people will have one or two bald patches, which can be treated easily with injections but in some cases all body hair falls out. Alopecia areata isn’t harmful or contagious, but it can be tough psychologically. Hair may grow back on its own, and treatment may help it grow back more quickly. Unfortunately, some people may experience alopecia areata repeatedly.
Baldness is also another hair state. Though hereditary, the trait may be more influenced by your mother’s family than your fathers’ according to research. Male pattern baldness often starts with receding hair at the temples, then on the crown, leaving a horseshoe-shaped ring of hair around the sides of the head. There are available treatments for baldness.
Lastly, help keep hair shiny by eating salmon and walnuts for omega-3 fatty acids; spinach and carrots for vitamin A; nuts for selenium; and oysters and cashews for zinc. All help maintain scalp and hair health, as do low-fat dairy, whole grains, and vegetables. Double the results: Foods good for your hair are also good for your heart.
Every woman loves her hair and wants her hair to be beautiful at all times. There are several factors that can cause your hair to be dry. Dry hair is not a hair type—it’s a condition that can be treated.
Understanding the root cause of dry hair and taking action may be all you need to get the locks you long for.
Your hair can get dry because your scalp doesn’t make enough oil to moisturize your hair, or your hair lets moisture escape.
Your scalp isn’t making enough moisture. Hair has no natural lubrication. It relies on oils made in the hair root to keep your hair moisturized and looking lustrous.
Sometimes, hair doesn’t make enough oil, which leads to very dry hair. As you age, your hair naturally makes less oil. Since the roots are under your skin dry scalp goes along with dry hair. Dry scalp peels and sheds, leading to dandruff flakes on your shoulders.
The moisture you have is escaping. Each strand of healthy hair has a protective layer called the cuticle. Just as your roof shields your home from rain, the cuticle shields your hair from heat. In a healthy cuticle, the layers lie tightly together and keep moisture in. When a cuticle’s layers separate and peel away from hair, its ability to hold moisture is compromised – some oil escapes.
Products with certain chemicals. Certain shampoos can leave your hair dry and some other hair care products.
Other factors that can leave your hair dry is pollution, use of thermal heat styling tools among others.
More African women are beginning to wear their natural hair and this is fast becoming the trend. The natural hair has a great tendency to dry out due to its nature and and the African weather. Dry hair makes your hair look dull and will eventually break.
Shampooing your hair

Rinsing your Hair
Use lukewarm or completely cold water to rinse your hair as opposed to hot water. Cold will help close the scales on hair’s cuticle and seal in nutrition. It will also give your hair extra shine and smoothness.
Moisturizing your hair
A dry hair is lacking in moisture hence the great need to frequently and deeply moisturize to tame tangles and repair dry hair. When your hair is dehydrated, use a deep treatment at least twice in a week.
